The Barrowland Ballroom
About
The Barrowland is the best live music venue in Scotland, and many bands will tell you it's the best in the UK. The sprung dance floor, the low ceiling, the neon sign outside, and the crowd — a Glasgow audience in the Barrowland is about as good as live music gets. The room holds about 1,900 and every one of them will be giving it everything. Built in the 1930s as a ballroom above the Barras market, it's been a gig venue since the 1960s and the list of acts who've played here is staggering. The acoustics are superb for a room this size, and the intimacy means you're never far from the stage. The famous starry ceiling and art deco features give it a character that purpose-built arenas can't touch. Gigs typically sell out fast for bigger names, so book early. The venue is in the East End, not far from Glasgow Cross. There's no assigned seating — it's all standing on that beautiful sprung floor. If you only see one gig in Glasgow, make it a Barrowland gig. You'll understand why bands queue up to play here.
