About

Glasgow Green, Templeton Street, Glasgow G40 1AT

Glasgow Green is the city's oldest park — common land since 1450 and the place where James Watt is said to have had his eureka moment about the steam engine while walking here in 1765. The park stretches along the Clyde in the East End, with the ornate Doulton Fountain (the largest terracotta fountain in the world), the McLennan Arch, and the imposing facade of Templeton's carpet factory — a building modelled on the Doge's Palace in Venice. The People's Palace is the park's jewel — a museum telling the social history of Glasgow from 1750 to the present day. It's not a grand art collection; it's the story of ordinary Glaswegians — housing conditions, working life, entertainment, political movements, and community. The Winter Gardens glasshouse attached to it is a beautiful tropical palm house with a café. The park is huge and can feel quiet in parts, but it's an important place in Glasgow's story — the Chartists, the suffragettes, and countless political rallies have been held here. The Clyde walkway passes through it. The People's Palace is free and takes about an hour. One of the most overlooked attractions in Glasgow.
