About

Long Millgate, Manchester M3 1SB

Chetham's Library is the oldest free public reference library in the English-speaking world, founded in 1653, and stepping inside genuinely feels like time travel. The medieval building — originally a 15th-century college for priests — has dark oak bookcases, chained reading desks, and alcoves where Marx and Engels studied together in the summer of 1845. That reading table is still there, marked with a plaque. The library holds over 100,000 volumes, including books printed before 1851, medieval manuscripts, and a remarkable collection of early printed maps. Guided tours take you through the medieval rooms, explain the history, and let you handle some of the historic volumes — it's an extraordinary experience for anyone who loves books, history, or beautiful buildings. Tours must be booked in advance and run on limited days — check the website. The building is next to Manchester Cathedral and Victoria Station, right in the medieval heart of the city. Combined with the cathedral and a walk along the Irwell, it's a reminder that Manchester's history stretches back much further than the Industrial Revolution.
