About

Victoria Street, Manchester M3 1SX

Manchester Cathedral is a medieval church that's been the spiritual centre of the city since the 15th century — and it's one of the most underrated cathedrals in England. The wide nave, stunning medieval woodwork (the choir stalls have some of the finest medieval carvings in the north), and the extraordinary Fire Window commemorating the wartime bombing all deserve attention. The cathedral was badly damaged in the IRA bombing of 1996 and has been beautifully restored. The Angel Stone — a 14th-century carved angel discovered during the restoration — is a moving artefact that connects the modern city to its medieval past. The building also houses a fragment of one of the earliest printed Bibles. It's free to enter, peaceful, and usually uncrowded — a genuine oasis in the busy city centre. The cathedral sits beside the River Irwell in what was the original medieval settlement of Manchester, next to Chetham's Library. Free lunchtime concerts are held regularly. The visitor centre and gift shop are good. A beautiful, contemplative space that most visitors to Manchester walk straight past.
