Band on the Wall
About
Band on the Wall has been a live music venue since the 1930s and is one of Manchester's most important cultural institutions. The name comes from the original resident band who played on a small stage mounted on the wall — and that spirit of intimate, boundary-crossing live music continues today. After a major renovation, the venue reopened with improved acoustics, better sightlines, and a capacity of around 500. The programming is exceptional — world music, jazz, electronic, grime, folk, afrobeat, experimental — genres that bigger venues won't touch but that regularly produce the most exciting live music in the city. It's the kind of venue where you can see an Afrobeat collective from Lagos on Thursday and a Manchester DJ collective on Saturday. The bar is good, the sound is excellent, and the room is intimate enough that every seat (or standing spot) feels connected to the stage. It's been championing diversity in music since long before it was fashionable, and the audience reflects that. One of Manchester's most important venues.
