Hockley
About
Hockley is Nottingham's creative quarter — a cluster of streets on the north side of the city centre packed with independent bars, cafés, record shops, vintage boutiques, and street art. It's the part of Nottingham that feels most like itself — unpretentious, creative, and with a strong independent spirit that's resisted the chains more successfully than most city centres. Broadway Cinema is the anchor — a gorgeous independent cinema in a converted 1920s building, with an excellent bar, café, and gallery. The Rough Trade record shop is here. Rescue Rooms and Rock City, two of the best live music venues in the Midlands, are nearby. The bars are excellent — Junkyard, the Bodega Social Club, and the Alchemist all have strong followings. The food scene has exploded — Kushi-ya does outstanding Japanese yakitori, Sexy Mama Loves Spaghetti is reliably excellent, and the street food options are varied and good. The area has a proper community feel — independent business owners know each other, regulars are actual regulars, and the whole thing feels organic rather than curated. Hockley is where Nottingham's creative energy lives.
