City of Caves
About
Beneath the streets of Nottingham lies a network of over 800 caves carved into the soft Sherwood Sandstone over centuries. The City of Caves attraction at the Broadmarsh end of the city centre offers guided tours through some of the most accessible and interesting — medieval tanneries, Victorian slum dwellings, a pub cellar, and an Anderson shelter from WWII. The caves are genuinely surprising in scale and variety. Some were used for storage and industry, others as dwellings, and the conditions in the Victorian-era cave houses were appalling — the tours don't shy away from this. The sandstone is soft enough to carve with hand tools, which is why Nottingham ended up with more underground spaces than almost any other city in Europe. The tours last about 45 minutes and operate on a timed entry basis. The experience gives you a completely different perspective on the city — walking the streets afterwards, you're constantly aware that there's an entire hidden Nottingham beneath your feet. Combine with the castle caves for a full subterranean day. Not recommended for claustrophobes, though the spaces are generally quite open.
