About

1 Brewhouse Yard, Nottingham NG1 6AD

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem claims to be the oldest pub in England, with a date of 1189 painted on its whitewashed facade. The historical accuracy of that date is debated (aren't they all?), but the pub is undeniably ancient and built into the sandstone caves at the base of Castle Rock. Rooms are carved directly into the rock — low ceilings, rough stone walls, and the kind of atmosphere that no amount of interior design could replicate. The Rock Lounge and the cave rooms are the most atmospheric — genuinely medieval-feeling spaces where you're drinking in a cave beneath a castle. The cursed model galleon in a glass case is a talking point — legend says anyone who cleans it dies (whether the bar staff believe this is unclear, but the model remains dusty). The beer is decent — a good selection of ales and the usual pub fare. The pub sits at the foot of Castle Rock, right next to the castle entrance, so it's a natural stop before or after a castle visit. It gets very busy at weekends and summer evenings — go at lunchtime on a weekday for a quieter experience. Whether or not it's genuinely the oldest pub in England, the cave setting is unique and the atmosphere is proper.
