About

Albert Dock, Liverpool L3 4AF

Albert Dock is Liverpool's cultural waterfront — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Grade I-listed dock buildings that's been transformed from derelict industrial ruin into one of the most visited attractions outside London. The massive brick-and-iron warehouses, built in 1846, surround a central dock basin and now house Tate Liverpool, the Beatles Story, the Merseyside Maritime Museum, the International Slavery Museum, restaurants, and independent shops. The architecture is magnificent — designed by Jesse Hartley, the dock was the world's first non-combustible warehouse system, built entirely of brick, stone, and iron. The massive Tuscan columns supporting the colonnades give the dock a grandeur that lifts it above mere commerce. Walking around the dock basin, with the water reflecting the warehouses, is one of Liverpool's most atmospheric experiences. The surrounding waterfront — the Three Graces (Liver Building, Cunard Building, Port of Liverpool Building), the Museum of Liverpool, and the ferry terminal — extends the cultural quarter along the Mersey. The whole area is best explored on foot over a full day. The views across the river to Birkenhead catch the sunset beautifully on clear evenings.
