About

Woolton Village, Liverpool L25 5JF

Woolton is a charming village in south Liverpool that played a pivotal role in Beatles history — it was at the Woolton Parish Church fête on 6 July 1957 that John Lennon's band The Quarrymen played and a mutual friend introduced him to Paul McCartney. The church, the fête field, and Strawberry Field (the Salvation Army children's home whose gardens Lennon played in as a child) are all here. Beyond the Beatles connection, Woolton Village is genuinely lovely — an old sandstone village with independent shops, tearooms, and pubs clustered around the medieval church. The village feels surprisingly rural given it's within Liverpool's boundaries. St Peter's Church and its graveyard (where Eleanor Rigby is buried — yes, really, though the connection to the song is debated) are atmospheric and beautifully maintained. Strawberry Field has been opened to visitors with a café, gardens, and an interactive exhibition. The walk from Woolton Village to Mendips (Lennon's childhood home on Menlove Avenue, managed by the National Trust) takes about 20 minutes. For Beatles pilgrims, this is holy ground. For everyone else, it's a lovely village with outstanding stories.
