About

Hope Street, Liverpool L1 9BP

The Liverpool Philharmonic is home to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra — one of the oldest professional orchestras in the world (founded 1840) — and the art deco concert hall it plays in is one of the most beautiful in Britain. The 1939 auditorium, with its sweeping lines, decorative panels, and acoustics tuned to perfection, is a masterpiece of inter-war design. The programming extends far beyond classical music: jazz, world music, rock, comedy, spoken word, and family concerts all feature. The RLPO's classical concerts are superb and often surprisingly affordable — weeknight concerts can be as little as £10-£15. The Philharmonic also presents major pop and rock artists in the main hall, and experimental music in the smaller Music Room. The building is on Hope Street, which connects Liverpool's two cathedrals and is lined with excellent restaurants. The Philharmonic Dining Rooms pub across the road is worth a visit for its extraordinary Victorian interior (the gents' toilets, with original marble and mosaic, are Grade I listed — the most ornate in England). Pre-concert dinner followed by a concert at the Phil is a perfect Liverpool evening.
