About

St James Mount, Liverpool L1 7AZ

Liverpool Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Britain and the fifth largest in the world — and standing inside it for the first time is a genuinely overwhelming experience. Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott (who also designed the red telephone box and Battersea Power Station) when he was just 22 years old, it took 74 years to build (1904-1978) and the scale is staggering: the nave is 189 metres long and the tower rises 101 metres. The interior is magnificent — vast sandstone arches, enormous stained glass windows, and a sense of space that makes most other large churches feel cramped. The Lady Chapel, completed first, is exquisite. The climb to the top of the tower (two lifts and 108 steps) offers the best panoramic views in Liverpool — across both cathedrals, the waterfront, and on clear days to Snowdonia and the Lake District. Entry is free (the tower experience is charged). The cathedral hosts regular concerts and events, and the acoustics are extraordinary. Evensong is free and beautiful. The cathedral sits at the top of Hope Street — walk the length of this street to reach the Metropolitan Cathedral at the other end (Liverpool has two cathedrals facing each other, one Catholic, one Anglican — typically Scouse).
