About

Blackheath Avenue, Greenwich, London SE10 8QY

Greenwich Park is one of London's royal parks and one of its finest: 183 acres of parkland sweeping down to the Thames, crowned by the Royal Observatory at its summit. Standing on the Prime Meridian Line — one foot in the Eastern Hemisphere, one in the Western — is a silly thrill that never gets old. The views from the Observatory hill across the river to Canary Wharf and the City are some of the best in London. The Royal Observatory itself is where timekeeping and navigation were revolutionised. The Flamsteed House, the Meridian Courtyard, and the planetarium are all worth your time — the planetarium shows are excellent for kids and adults alike. The red time ball on the roof still drops at 1pm every day, just as it has since 1833. Combine Greenwich Park with the National Maritime Museum and the Cutty Sark at the bottom of the hill (both excellent), and you've got a full day. The Greenwich Market nearby has good food stalls and independent craft sellers. The foot tunnel under the Thames to Island Gardens gives you the classic postcard view of the Old Royal Naval College.
