Maltby Street Market
About
Maltby Street Market is what Borough Market was before the tour buses found it — a compact, quality-focused food market tucked under the railway arches in Bermondsey. It's smaller, less famous, and infinitely less stressful than its neighbour. The traders here are serious about their craft: natural wine, sourdough, charcuterie, small-batch spirits, and some of the best street food in London. Standout stalls include Wazen for outstanding Middle Eastern food, St John Bakery for legendary doughnuts, and The Ham & Cheese Company for charcuterie boards that could make you cry. The arches themselves house permanent food businesses too — 40 Maltby Street (natural wine bar), Ropewalk (coffee), and several excellent breweries. It only runs on Saturdays (9am-4pm) and Sundays (11am-4pm), and the weekend pace is relaxed. No elbowing through crowds here — just wandering between arches with a coffee in one hand and a pastry in the other. It's the locals' market, and the quality reflects that.
