About

Bankside, London SE1 9TG

Tate Modern transformed a decommissioned power station on the South Bank into one of the most visited modern art museums in the world, and it did it brilliantly. The vast Turbine Hall — the former engine room — hosts monumental free installations that regularly become cultural events in themselves. The permanent collection spans everything from Picasso and Dalí to Rothko and Warhol, displayed across themed suites rather than chronologically. The Switch House extension (opened 2016) added dramatic new gallery spaces and a free 360-degree viewing platform on Level 10 with panoramic views across London. The top-floor restaurant is excellent, and on clear days the terrace views are staggering. The permanent collection is free and could occupy you for an entire day. The paid temporary exhibitions (usually two or three running simultaneously) are generally outstanding and less crowded than the free galleries. The Turbine Hall commission, unveiled each October, is always worth seeing — past highlights include Olafur Eliasson's artificial sun and Ai Weiwei's sunflower seeds.
