About

Lathkill Dale, Over Haddon, Bakewell, Derbyshire DE45 1JE

Lathkill Dale is a hidden gem of the White Peak — a narrow limestone dale with a clear river running through ancient ash woodland, wildflower meadows, and the remains of old lead mining works. It's a National Nature Reserve and one of the finest examples of a limestone dale in Britain, but it gets a fraction of the visitors that Dovedale attracts, which is entirely to its advantage. The river is extraordinary — in parts of the dale it disappears underground through the limestone, emerging further downstream. The water is gin-clear and the trout are visible in the pools. In spring, the woodland floor is carpeted with wild garlic, and the meadows along the dale are rich with orchids, cowslips, and other limestone wildflowers. The old mine workings — aqueducts, shafts, and engine houses — add an industrial layer to the natural beauty. The walk from Over Haddon to Monyash through the full length of the dale is about 5 miles and takes half a day at a relaxed pace. The Lathkill Hotel in Over Haddon has a terrace with views down the dale. The dale can be muddy after rain and the paths are uneven — walking boots recommended. If you want the beauty of the Peak District without the crowds, this is the place.
