About

Monsal Head, Bakewell, Derbyshire DE45 1NL

The Monsal Trail is an 8.5-mile traffic-free walking and cycling path along the route of the old Midland Railway from Bakewell to Wyedale, passing through tunnels (now lit) and over the spectacular Monsal Head Viaduct. The trail follows the Wye Valley through some of the most beautiful limestone scenery in the Peak District, and it's one of the best family cycling routes in England. Monsal Head itself is one of the great viewpoints of the Peak District — a stunning view down the valley with the viaduct curving across the river below. The Monsal Head Hotel has a terrace with the view and serves decent food. The path down to the viaduct from the viewpoint is steep but worth it to walk across. Bike hire is available at Hassop Station (a beautifully converted old station with a popular café and bookshop) near the Bakewell end. The trail surface is compacted limestone, so it's suitable for most bikes. The tunnels are an experience in themselves — Headstone Tunnel is 533 metres long and genuinely atmospheric. Flat, scenic, and traffic-free — it's hard to think of a better short cycle ride in England.
