About

Stanage Edge, Hathersage, Derbyshire S32 1BR

Stanage Edge is the most iconic gritstone edge in the Peak District — a four-mile escarpment of dark millstone grit rising above the Derwent Valley with views across to Kinder Scout and the moors beyond. The edge is a mecca for rock climbers (over 1,500 climbing routes), but you don't need to climb to appreciate it — the walk along the top is one of the finest ridge walks in England, with the Dark Peak moorland on one side and the Hope Valley spreading below on the other. The approach from the Hathersage road is the most popular — a short uphill walk brings you to the base of the edge, where climbers are usually working the routes. The rocks at the top are perfect for scrambling, sitting, and taking in the views. On a clear day you can see for 30 miles or more. In autumn, the surrounding moorland turns purple with heather. Stanage featured in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film — Keira Knightley stands on the edge looking dramatic, which is easy to do here. The Robin Hood pub in the valley below is a solid walkers' pub. Come on a weekday outside school holidays for quieter paths. The edge faces west, so the sunsets are extraordinary.
