About

Chatsworth, Bakewell, Derbyshire DE45 1PP

Chatsworth is the seat of the Duke of Devonshire and one of England's grandest stately homes — a Palladian palace set in 1,000 acres of parkland landscaped by Capability Brown, with interiors that range from Baroque painted ceilings to contemporary art installations. The house has been reinventing itself for 500 years, and the combination of historical grandeur and modern curatorial ambition makes it one of the most rewarding country house visits in England. The art collection is extraordinary: Old Masters, Neoclassical sculpture, a Rembrandt, and regular contemporary art commissions that place modern work in dialogue with the historic rooms. The Painted Hall and Great Dining Room are jaw-dropping. The garden — 105 acres including the famous Emperor Fountain (which can reach 90 metres), a maze, a rock garden, and a kitchen garden — is a major attraction in its own right. The farmyard and adventure playground make Chatsworth excellent for families. The estate farm shop is outstanding. The parkland (free to walk in) stretches to the hills above, with deer, ancient trees, and views back to the house. Allow a full day. Book tickets online. The Peak District countryside surrounding Chatsworth is beautiful — combine with a walk or a visit to Bakewell (famous for its pudding) nearby.
