About

Mam Tor, Castleton, Hope Valley, Derbyshire S33 8WA

Mam Tor — the 'Mother Hill' — is one of the most popular walks in the Peak District, and for good reason. The summit ridge gives extraordinary views in both directions: the green, pastoral Hope Valley to the east and the wild, dark moorland of Edale and Kinder Scout to the west. The contrast between the two landscapes, visible simultaneously from the narrow ridge, is one of the defining sights of the Peak District. The walk from the Mam Nick car park to the summit is short (about 20 minutes) on a well-paved path with steps. The ridge walk continuing south along Hollins Cross to Lose Hill adds another hour and is superb. The old road beneath Mam Tor, destroyed by landslips and now abandoned, is a fascinating sight — cracked and buckled tarmac slowly being reclaimed by the hillside. Mam Tor is an Iron Age hillfort — the defensive ditches are still visible on the summit. Come early morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewer people. The Rambler Inn in Edale and the Cheshire Cheese in Hope are both good post-walk pubs. On a clear day this is one of the most rewarding short walks in England.
