Edinburgh Zoo
About
Edinburgh Zoo sits on 82 acres of hillside in Corstorphine, about 15 minutes from the city centre, and it's home to over 1,000 rare and endangered animals. It's the only zoo in the UK to have giant pandas (subject to their agreement schedule), and its penguin colony — including the famous Penguin Parade where they waddle voluntarily along a pathway — has been a highlight since 1913. The zoo is built on a steep hill, which means spectacular views across the city but also a proper workout getting around. Start at the top and work your way down — it's much easier. The Budongo Trail chimpanzee enclosure is one of the best primate exhibits in Europe, allowing close observation through huge glass panels. The koala enclosure (the only one in the UK) and the sun bear habitat are also standouts. It's a genuine conservation organisation — the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland does serious research and breeding work. Allow 3-4 hours minimum. The bus from Princes Street drops you right at the gate. Bring waterproofs — it's Edinburgh, after all.
