About

Shakespeare Avenue, Bath BA2 4RQ

Alexandra Park is Bath's elevated secret — a hillside park on Beechen Cliff that offers what might be the most romantic view of the city. From the viewpoint near the top, you look down across the entire Bath valley: the Abbey, the Royal Crescent, Pulteney Bridge, and the Georgian terraces climbing the surrounding hills, all in honey-coloured Bath stone. The park itself is modest — a hillside of grass and mature trees with a playground and a few benches. It's the view that makes it special. The walk up from the city centre through Widcombe or Lyncombe is steep (about 15-20 minutes) but the payoff is extraordinary. Bring a blanket, a picnic, and someone worth sharing a sunset with. Alexandra Park is particularly magical at dusk when the Bath stone buildings turn golden in the low light and the city below begins to glow. In autumn, the tree colour on the surrounding hills frames the view beautifully. It's free, uncrowded, and known mainly to locals — most visitors to Bath never discover it. Their loss.
