Not to be confused with the Fringe, the Edinburgh International Festival is a curated programme of the world's finest classical music, opera, theatre, and dance. Founded in 1947 to unite Europe through culture after WWII, it remains one of the most prestigious performing arts festivals in the world. The programme features world-class orchestras, opera companies, dance troupes, and theatre companies performing in Edinburgh's finest venues — the Usher Hall, the Festival Theatre, the Lyceum, and others. The opening concert and the closing fireworks concert (set to live orchestra, with the castle as backdrop) are Edinburgh highlights. Tickets range from affordable to premium. The quality of performance is consistently extraordinary — this is where the world's best come to play. It runs concurrently with the Fringe, creating an August where Edinburgh has more culture per square mile than anywhere on earth.
