About

The Countess of Huntingdon's Chapel, The Paragon, Bath BA1 5NA

The Museum of Bath Architecture explains how Bath was built — the vision, the craftsmanship, and the economics behind the creation of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Housed in the Gothic Chapel of the Countess of Huntingdon on the Paragon, it tells the story of the city's transformation from a medieval wool town to a Georgian masterpiece. The museum covers everything from the quarrying and carving of Bath stone to the lives of the architects (the John Woods, father and son), the builders, and the developers who created the Royal Crescent, the Circus, and the wider city. Models, drawings, and original artefacts bring the story to life. A working model showing how Bath stone was quarried and transported is particularly engaging. It's small (allow about an hour) and slightly off the main tourist trail, which means it's usually quiet. But if you're interested in understanding why Bath looks the way it does — and what it took to build an entire city in matching stone — it's genuinely fascinating. The chapel building itself is an interesting 18th-century structure. Combined with walking the streets it describes, this museum transforms how you see the city.
