About

Royal Crescent, Bath BA1 2LR

The Royal Crescent is arguably the finest example of Georgian architecture in the world — a sweeping arc of 30 terraced houses designed by John Wood the Younger and built between 1767 and 1774. The honey-coloured Bath stone, the massive Ionic columns, and the perfect proportions create something that transcends mere architecture — it's civic art on a monumental scale. No. 1 Royal Crescent is a museum that recreates the interiors of a Georgian townhouse with period-accurate furnishings, wallpapers, and domestic objects. The kitchen in the basement is particularly fascinating — showing how a wealthy Georgian household ran behind the elegant facade. The Gainsborough Bath Spa at the eastern end offers luxury accommodation and spa facilities. The crescent is best viewed from the sloping lawn in front (Royal Victoria Park) where the full sweep of the architecture can be absorbed. The crescent faces south, so afternoon light is particularly beautiful. It's a working street — people live here — so please be respectful when visiting. Combined with a walk to The Circus (another John Wood masterpiece) and the Assembly Rooms, you get a concentrated masterclass in Georgian urban design.
