About

Royal Victoria Park, Bath BA1 2NR

Royal Victoria Park is Bath's largest park — 57 acres of green space stretching from the Royal Crescent to the River Avon. It was opened in 1830 by the 11-year-old Princess Victoria (seven years before she became Queen), making it one of the first public parks in England. The botanical gardens within the park are a gem — a compact but rich collection including a Temple of Minerva. The park has a large playground (recently refurbished and excellent), a putting green, tennis courts, and an annual events programme including the Bath Festival orchestra concerts. The long walkway from the Royal Crescent to the bandstand, lined with mature trees, is particularly beautiful. In spring, the park's tree collection is stunning. It's a perfect family park — the playground alone can occupy children for hours, and the wide lawns are ideal for picnics and ball games. The aerial view from the Royal Crescent above shows the full sweep of the park. On warm days, it's where Bath comes to relax — and the combination of Georgian architecture above and green parkland below is quintessentially Bath.
