About

4/5 Pavilion Buildings, Brighton BN1 1EE

The Royal Pavilion is the most extraordinary building in Brighton — and possibly in England. George IV's extravagant seaside palace looks like an Indian Mughal palace on the outside and a Chinese emperor's dream on the inside, all set incongruously in the middle of a Sussex seaside town. The Banqueting Room, with its enormous dragon chandelier and painted palm-tree columns, is genuinely jaw-dropping. Built between 1787 and 1823 by architect John Nash, the Pavilion was George's escape from London — a place where he could entertain, eat, and live on a scale that scandalised polite society. The kitchens alone are remarkable — a cast-iron masterpiece that could produce dinner for hundreds. The Music Room, with its hand-painted Chinese wallpaper and lotus-shaped chandeliers, is one of the most beautiful rooms in England. The gardens surrounding the Pavilion are free to enjoy and beautifully maintained. The museum shop is excellent. Allow at least 90 minutes for the building, longer if you love decorative arts. The audio guide brings the rooms to life with stories of George's outrageous parties. It's Brighton's unmissable experience — even if you've seen photos, nothing prepares you for the real thing.
