The Lanes
About
The Lanes is Brighton's original medieval street pattern — a tight, twisting network of narrow alleyways in the heart of the old town that's been a centre for antiques, jewellery, and independent shopping for centuries. The lanes are barely wide enough for two people to pass, and every turn reveals another tiny shop: antique jewellers, vintage boutiques, quirky gift shops, and some of Brighton's best restaurants. The atmosphere is unique — part treasure hunt, part time capsule. The buildings lean in overhead, fairy lights crisscross between them, and the sense of discovery is genuine. The concentration of antique jewellers is remarkable — dozens of shops displaying everything from Georgian rings to Art Deco brooches. Even if you're not buying, the window shopping is excellent. The Lanes are best explored without a plan — just wander and see what you find. Brighton Square, in the heart of the network, has outdoor café seating and is a lovely spot to pause. The area connects to North Laine (different place, different character) via the pedestrianised streets around Bond Street. Weekends are busiest, but the Lanes retain their charm even on quiet weekday mornings.
