About

Royal Pavilion Gardens, Brighton BN1 1EE

Brighton Museum sits in the Royal Pavilion complex and houses surprisingly rich collections of art, design, fashion, and world culture. The decorative art collection includes stunning Art Nouveau and Art Deco pieces, and the fashion gallery traces sartorial history through original garments. The 'Images of Brighton' gallery tells the city's story from fishing village to Regency resort to progressive modern city. The museum is well-curated and manageable — you can see the highlights in an hour or two without feeling overwhelmed. The 20th-century art and design collections are particularly strong, with pieces by Salvador Dalí and local artists. The world art galleries include Egyptian artefacts and Pacific Island collections. It's free (donations welcome), air-conditioned (useful on hot beach days), and connected to the Royal Pavilion gardens. The café is good. It's an excellent complement to a Pavilion visit — the museum provides cultural context for the extraordinary building next door. Temporary exhibitions change regularly and often explore themes relevant to Brighton's identity as a progressive, creative city.
