Dishoom King's Cross
About
Dishoom has become a London institution, and the King's Cross branch — set in a beautifully restored Victorian transit shed — is the most atmospheric of the lot. The interiors are modelled on the Irani cafés of 1960s Bombay, all ceiling fans, vintage photographs, and bentwood furniture, and the food is some of the best Indian cooking in London at prices that don't make you wince. The bacon naan roll at breakfast is legendary — people queue for it. Literally queue, outside, in the rain. The black daal, slow-cooked for 24 hours, is extraordinary. The lamb biryani, the gunpowder potatoes, the ruby murray — it's all brilliant. Go with a group and order a feast. The no-reservation policy for groups under six means you might wait (especially at weekends), but there's a gorgeous bar area where you can sip chai old fashioneds while you wait, and the queue moves fast. Book ahead for larger groups. Every Dishoom location is good, but King's Cross has the edge for atmosphere.
