About

Newstead Abbey, Ravenshead, Nottinghamshire NG15 8NA

Newstead Abbey is the ancestral home of Lord Byron — a medieval priory converted into a country house, set in beautiful gardens and parkland north of Nottingham. Byron inherited the estate at the age of ten and lived here intermittently, keeping a tame bear in the grounds (as you do). The house is atmospheric and eccentric — Byron's personal effects, furniture, and artworks are displayed alongside the medieval priory ruins. The gardens are exceptional — a Japanese Garden, a Spanish Garden, a rose garden, rock and fern gardens, and extensive parkland with a large lake. The mix of styles reflects different periods of the estate's history and the whole grounds cover about 300 acres. In autumn, the colours around the lake are magnificent. The priory ruins attached to the house are substantial and atmospheric — you can trace the original cloister layout and the medieval church. The combination of Gothic priory, eccentric poet's home, and beautiful gardens is unique. The café in the old stables is pleasant. Newstead is about 12 miles north of Nottingham and easily combined with Sherwood Forest. The grounds are free; the house has an admission charge.
