Escape to Freight Island is a sprawling food, drink, and entertainment destination built in the Mayfield depot — a vast former railway goods yard behind Piccadilly Station. The space is industrial and atmospheric: shipping containers, railway arches, and exposed brick housing an eclectic mix of food traders, bars, a stage for live music, and even a crazy golf course. The food offering is diverse and quality: tacos, wood-fired pizza, dim sum, vegan street food, and more. The bars serve everything from craft beer to cocktails. Live music and DJ sets run most weekends, and the programming includes comedy, markets, and cultural events. The space is huge — you can wander between indoor and outdoor areas, finding different vibes in different corners. It's particularly brilliant in summer when the outdoor terraces come alive, but the covered areas work year-round. Family-friendly during the day, transitioning to a more party atmosphere in the evenings. Free entry most times, though some ticketed events apply.
