About

Devil's Dyke Road, Brighton BN1 8YJ

Devil's Dyke is a dramatic V-shaped valley carved into the South Downs about 5 miles north of Brighton — and the views from the top are some of the most spectacular in southern England. On a clear day you can see across the Weald to the North Downs, and on a really clear day, the Isle of Wight. The valley itself, according to legend, was dug by the Devil to let the sea flood the churches of the Weald. The walk along the ridge is exhilarating — wind in your face, paragliders and hang-gliders launching from the slopes around you, and that extraordinary view stretching in every direction. The South Downs Way passes right through, so you can extend the walk in either direction along the chalk ridge. Several circular routes of varying lengths start from the car park. It's a brilliant escape from Brighton — reachable by bus (77 from Churchill Square in summer) or a short drive. The pub at the top, the Devil's Dyke Inn, is well-positioned for a post-walk pint. On warm summer evenings, watching the sunset from the ridge with the lights of Brighton twinkling below is magical. Free to visit, free to walk.
