The Level
About
The Level is Brighton's community park — a flat, open green space near the station that has been a public gathering place since 1822. After a major renovation, it's now a brilliant example of how a simple urban park can be the heart of a neighbourhood: a skatepark that's one of the best in the south of England, a playground, table tennis tables, a community garden, and plenty of open grass. The park is the unofficial town square for the North Laine and Hanover communities. On sunny days it fills with a genuinely diverse mix of skaters, families, dog walkers, students, and people just enjoying the sun. Regular events include community markets, outdoor cinema, and gatherings of various kinds. The skatepark attracts riders from across the south coast. The Level sits on London Road, surrounded by some of Brighton's most interesting food shops and cafés — the Open Market (a covered market with excellent food stalls) is just across the road. It's not beautiful in a traditional park sense — it's flat and functional — but it has something more important: it's a genuine community space where Brighton's famously eclectic population actually mixes.
