Duke of York's Picturehouse
About
The Duke of York's is the oldest cinema in continuous use in the UK — screening films since 1910 — and it's a Brighton institution. The single-screen cinema on Preston Circus combines the magic of a vintage picture palace with an excellent programme of independent, world, and classic cinema. The screen has a pair of distinctive stripy legs sticking out above the entrance that's become a local landmark. Inside, the auditorium has been refurbished but retains its period charm — comfortable seating, a Wurlitzer organ that's still played on special occasions, and the sense that you're watching cinema in a room where people have been doing the same thing for over a century. The programming mixes new independent releases with special screenings, live satellite events, and late-night cult favourites. The Duke of York's is part of the Picturehouse chain, so members get benefits, but it retains a fiercely independent spirit. The Saturday morning kids' clubs are popular with local families. The bar serves decent coffee and drinks. It's the kind of cinema that reminds you why watching films on a big screen in a beautiful room with other people is better than streaming at home.
