About

Cramond, Edinburgh EH4 6NS

Cramond Island is a small tidal island in the Firth of Forth that you can walk to across a concrete causeway — but only at low tide. The walk takes about 20 minutes each way, and the island itself is a wild, windswept place with WWII military ruins, rocky shores, and views across to Fife and back to Edinburgh. Checking the tide times is absolutely essential — the causeway floods completely at high tide and people get stranded every year. The City of Edinburgh Council posts tide tables at the causeway entrance, or check online before you go. As a rule, aim to start crossing at least 2 hours after high tide, and start heading back at least 2 hours before the next high tide. The village of Cramond itself is worth exploring — a pretty waterside settlement with a Roman fort site, a 17th-century inn, and a lovely walk along the River Almond to the old mills. The promenade along the shore towards Silverknowes has views across to Cramond Island, Inchmickery, and the Forth Bridge. It's about 25 minutes by bus from the city centre and feels like a proper seaside escape.
