About

16 Narrow Quay, Bristol BS1 4QA

The Arnolfini is Bristol's centre for contemporary art, housed in a converted 1830s tea warehouse on the harbourside. Since 1961, it has been one of the most important contemporary art spaces outside London — programming exhibitions, performance, dance, film, and music with a commitment to challenging, international work. The gallery spaces are bright and well-proportioned, and the exhibitions change regularly — expect anything from video installations to photography, sculpture to sound art. The bookshop is one of the best art bookshops in the south-west, and the café-bar overlooking the harbour is a favourite meeting spot for Bristol's creative community. Entry to the galleries is free, and the programme is refreshingly unpredictable — you might encounter something baffling, something beautiful, or something that changes how you think about art entirely. The harbourside location means you can combine a visit with a walk along the waterfront to the SS Great Britain, M Shed, or the Watershed cinema. It's the kind of venue that makes Bristol feel like a city that genuinely cares about culture.
