About

King Street, Bristol BS1 4ER

The Llandoger Trow is a 17th-century timber-framed pub on King Street that's one of the oldest and most atmospheric pubs in Bristol. Built in 1664, its black-and-white façade has barely changed in 350 years. Legend has it that Daniel Defoe met Alexander Selkirk here — the castaway who inspired Robinson Crusoe — and that Robert Louis Stevenson modelled the Admiral Benbow inn from Treasure Island on this very pub. Whether or not the literary legends are true, the building itself is magnificent. The interior is all dark wood, uneven floors, low beams, and the kind of genuine character that no amount of gastropub renovation can manufacture. The pub has had various incarnations over the years, and the food and drink offering varies, but the atmosphere remains constant. King Street itself is one of Bristol's finest — a cobbled street of historic pubs, the Theatre Royal (the oldest continuously working theatre in England), and some excellent restaurants. The Llandoger Trow is best enjoyed on a quiet weekday evening when you can sit in one of the snugs and absorb 350 years of Bristol history through the walls.
