St Nicholas Market
About
St Nicholas Market is the beating heart of Bristol's food and shopping scene — a vibrant covered market in the centre of the old city that's been trading since 1743. The Glass Arcade and Covered Market house a mix of independent traders selling everything from vintage clothing to vinyl records, but it's the food that draws the crowds: Bristol's best falafel, Caribbean curry, gourmet burgers, crêpes, and freshly made pasta all compete for your attention and your appetite. Wednesday and Friday are the busiest market days, when the surrounding streets fill with additional food and craft stalls. The Nails Market (named after the bronze nails where merchants used to settle debts — 'paying on the nail') runs on Fridays and Saturdays with arts, crafts, and artisan food producers. The market sits in a beautiful part of the old city, surrounded by medieval lanes and historic pubs. Combine your visit with a wander through the old city streets — Corn Street, Small Street, and the lanes around them are some of Bristol's most atmospheric. Arrive hungry, leave happy.
