About

Stokes Croft, Bristol BS1 3QY

Bristol is Banksy's hometown, and the city proudly wears its connection to the world's most famous street artist. Several original Banksy works survive on Bristol's walls, and a self-guided walking trail takes you past the most significant ones — including 'Mild Mild West' (a teddy bear throwing a Molotov cocktail at riot police) on Stokes Croft and 'The Girl with the Pierced Eardrum' on Hanover Place. Beyond Banksy, Bristol has one of the richest street art scenes in the world. The annual Upfest festival has left the Bedminster area covered in large-scale murals by international artists. The Nelson Street corridor and Stokes Croft are outdoor galleries that change constantly. The quality and ambition of the work is remarkable — these aren't tags, they're genuine public artworks. You can do the trail independently (various maps are available online and from the tourist information centre) or join a guided tour for context and stories. Allow 2-3 hours for a good walking tour of the major works. Wear comfortable shoes — you'll cover a few miles. It's a genuinely unique way to see the city and understand Bristol's creative, rebellious spirit.
