About

Stokes Croft, Bristol BS1 3QP

Stokes Croft is Bristol's most counter-cultural neighbourhood — a long, slightly rough-edged street north of the centre that's become the city's creative heartland. The buildings are covered in street art (including several original Banksys), the shops are defiantly independent, and the atmosphere crackles with the kind of creative energy that cities spend millions trying to manufacture. The area is home to vintage shops, independent record stores, vegan cafés, artist studios, and the People's Republic of Stokes Croft — a community interest company that has become a symbol of Bristol's grassroots creative spirit. The Hamilton House creative hub hosts studios, events, and a rooftop bar. The street art changes constantly, so every visit reveals something new. Stokes Croft is Bristol at its most authentic — messy, creative, and unapologetically itself. It's not polished, and some visitors might find it edgy, but the creative energy is genuine and the food and drink options are excellent (try the Canteen or Café Kino). Best explored on foot, ideally continuing up to Gloucester Road for more independent shops.
