About

Castle Park, Bristol BS1 3XB

Castle Park is a city-centre green space built on the site of Bristol's most heavily bombed area during World War II. The park sits between Broadmead shopping centre and the floating harbour, and the ruins of St Peter's Church — left standing as a memorial to the Blitz — give the space a contemplative quality that sets it apart from a typical city park. The park stretches along the River Avon with waterside paths, formal gardens, and open lawns. In summer it fills with office workers, students, and families. The vaults of the ruined castle (Bristol Castle once stood here) can be seen through glass panels set into the ground. The bandstand hosts occasional live music in summer. It's a useful green oasis in the commercial heart of the city — a place to pause between shopping and sightseeing. The riverside path connects to the harbourside in one direction and Temple Meads in the other. The gardens are well-maintained, and the combination of medieval ruins, wartime memorial, and modern city life creates a layered, thoughtful space.
