About

King Street, Bristol BS1 4ED

Bristol Old Vic is the oldest continuously working theatre in the English-speaking world — audiences have been watching performances here since 1766. The auditorium is a jewel-box Georgian horseshoe, intimate and beautiful, and the recent renovation has added modern foyers and a studio space while preserving the historic core. The programming mixes classic revivals, new writing, family shows, and transfers from and to London. The theatre has a strong record of commissioning new work and developing talent — many actors and directors who went on to significant careers started here. The Christmas show is a Bristol tradition and sells out months ahead. The new foyer building is an impressive glass-and-steel structure that opens the theatre up to the street. The bar and café are welcoming pre- and post-show hangouts. King Street, where the theatre sits, is one of Bristol's finest streets for an evening out — historic pubs, restaurants, and the 17th-century Llandoger Trow all within a few steps.
