Wales Millennium Centre
About
Wales Millennium Centre is Cardiff Bay's cultural centrepiece — a striking bronze-coloured arts complex with an inscription in giant steel letters across its façade reading, in Welsh and English, 'In These Stones Horizons Sing.' The building houses the Welsh National Opera, the national dance and literature companies, and a programme of theatre, musicals, comedy, and live music. The architecture is deliberately Welsh in its inspiration — the slate and bronze exterior evokes the Welsh landscape, and the interior combines soaring public spaces with intimate performance venues. The main Donald Gordon Theatre seats 1,900 and hosts West End tours, opera, and ballet. The smaller Weston Studio programmes new work and experimental performances. The foyer is free to enter and architecturally impressive — the scale of the building becomes clear when you step inside. Free foyer performances and events happen regularly. The centre sits directly on Roald Dahl Plass, making it the anchor of Cardiff Bay's cultural life. Even if you're not seeing a show, the building is worth visiting for its architecture alone.
