About

Roald Dahl Plass, Cardiff Bay, Cardiff CF10 4PH

Roald Dahl Plass is a dramatic oval public plaza in Cardiff Bay named after the city's most famous son. The centrepiece is the iconic Water Tower — a 70-foot steel pillar that rises from a massive expanse of polished slate paving. Doctor Who and Torchwood fans will recognise it instantly as the location of the Torchwood Hub entrance, and the invisible lift scenes were filmed right here. The Plass sits directly in front of Wales Millennium Centre, and the scale of the space is impressive — it's designed for public gatherings, outdoor performances, and events. The Pierhead Building (a gorgeous red terracotta Victorian gem) flanks one side, and the Senedd — the Welsh Parliament building with its stunning timber and glass architecture — sits on the other. The Senedd is free to visit and architecturally fascinating — the funnel-shaped roof made from sustainable Welsh wood is remarkable. Free tours explain the building and Welsh democracy. The whole Plass area comes alive during events like the Cardiff International Food & Drink Festival and the Winter Wonderland. Even on a quiet day, the combination of architecture, water views, and pop-culture connections makes it worth the walk from the centre.
