About

Great Western Dockyard, Gas Ferry Road, Bristol BS1 6TY

The SS Great Britain was the world's first great ocean liner — designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, launched in 1843, and now beautifully restored in the very dry dock in Bristol where she was built. The ship is a stunning piece of engineering and the restoration is brilliantly done: you can explore the entire vessel from the engine room to the first-class dining saloon, with atmospheric recreations of life on board in the 1840s. The 'Being Brunel' museum alongside the ship is excellent — an immersive exploration of the great engineer's life and mind, housed in a purpose-built space. The glass 'sea' beneath the ship (covering the waterline to prevent further corrosion) is an ingenious touch. Climbing down into the dry dock to see the hull from below is genuinely awe-inspiring. Allow 2-3 hours for ship and museum. It's on Bristol's harbourside, so combine with the other waterfront attractions. The café has harbour views. Your ticket is valid for a year, so you can return. It's one of the best maritime museums in the world and a fitting tribute to one of the greatest engineers who ever lived.
