About

Flat Holm Island, Bristol Channel, Cardiff

Flat Holm is a small island in the Bristol Channel, about 5 miles south of Cardiff — and it's one of the most unusual day trips you can take from any British city. The island is a nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the place where Marconi sent the first radio transmission across open sea in 1897. It's also home to a colony of slow worms, a Victorian isolation hospital, and a lighthouse. Boat trips run from Cardiff Bay during summer months (Easter to October, weather permitting), and the crossing takes about 40 minutes. Once on the island, volunteer wardens lead guided walks covering the wildlife (the gull colonies are enormous), the military history (the island was fortified during both World Wars), and the Marconi connection. The Victorian cholera hospital buildings are atmospherically ruined. It's genuinely remote-feeling despite being visible from Cardiff — there's no electricity, no running water, and no shop. Bring everything you need. The boat schedule means you typically have about 3-4 hours on the island. Book well in advance as trips are limited by weather and tide. One of the most unique experiences available from any UK city.
