About

The Esplanade, Penarth CF64 3AU

Penarth Pier is a beautifully restored Victorian pier jutting into the Bristol Channel from the pretty seaside town of Penarth — just a short walk across the Cardiff Bay Barrage or a quick train ride from Cardiff Central. The pier pavilion houses a gallery, cinema, and café, and the promenade along the seafront is one of the most pleasant walks in the Cardiff area. The esplanade stretches along the cliff top above a pebbly beach, lined with Edwardian villas and well-kept gardens. The views across the channel to Somerset and Devon are lovely on a clear day. The town itself has a charming high street with independent shops, good restaurants (the Fig Tree and Heno are both excellent), and a distinctly genteel atmosphere that feels a world away from central Cardiff. The walk from Cardiff Bay along the Barrage to Penarth (about 30 minutes) is a great way to arrive — you cross the lock gates and barrage with water on both sides and views back to the Millennium Centre. On a sunny afternoon, sitting on Penarth Pier with an ice cream and the Bristol Channel sparkling below is as good as it gets.
