About

Tongwynlais, Cardiff CF15 7JS

Castell Coch is a Victorian Gothic fairy-tale castle perched in the beech woods above the village of Tongwynlais, just north of Cardiff. Like Cardiff Castle, it was rebuilt by the 3rd Marquess of Bute and architect William Burges in the 1870s — but while Cardiff Castle is grand and urban, Castell Coch is intimate, romantic, and frankly bonkers. The conical turrets emerging from the trees look like something from a Brothers Grimm illustration. Inside, the rooms are painted floor to ceiling with elaborate murals — scenes from Aesop's Fables in the Drawing Room, a domed ceiling of stars and butterflies in Lady Bute's Bedroom, and intricate carved and gilded details throughout. It's smaller than Cardiff Castle but arguably even more visually overwhelming — every surface is decorated. The castle sits above a steep wooded hillside with walking trails through the beech forest. The walk up from the car park takes about 10 minutes. It's a Cadw property, so your ticket also gives you a sense of the broader Welsh heritage network. Allow about an hour for the castle and another for the woodland walk. A magical spot.
