About

Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3NP

National Museum Cardiff houses one of the best art collections in the UK — and most people outside Wales have no idea. The Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collection is genuinely world-class: Renoir, Monet, Cézanne, and the largest collection of Impressionist paintings outside Paris, donated by the Davies sisters of Llandinam in the early 20th century. Beyond the art, the museum spans natural history, archaeology, and geology — the 'Evolution of Wales' gallery takes you on a 4.6 billion-year journey from the Big Bang to the present day, with genuine meteorites, dinosaur fossils, and specimens from Wales's extraordinary geological heritage. The Bronze Age gold collection is stunning. It's completely free, beautifully laid out, and rarely overcrowded. The building sits in Cathays Park alongside Cardiff's impressive civic centre, a grand avenue of Portland stone buildings that's one of the finest Edwardian civic complexes in the world. Allow at least 2 hours. The café is decent. This museum would be a major attraction in any city — in Cardiff, it's a treasure that deserves far more recognition.
